Basement Waterproofing in Fort Wayne, IN
Water in the basement and foundation problems usually share a cause: water building up in the soil around the house. Keeping that water away, or catching it before it reaches your floor, protects the walls as well as what you store downstairs.

Why Fort Wayne Basements Take On Water
Much of Allen County sits on clay-rich glacial soil that drains slowly. When snowmelt and spring rain arrive together, the ground around a foundation fills with water and stays wet. That water presses on the walls and under the slab and finds its way in through cracks, mortar joints and the seam where the floor meets the wall.
Where the water shows up tells you a lot:
- Along the bottom of the walls: water is building up in the soil and under the slab, then pushing in at the floor joint.
- Through a wall crack: the crack is the path, and saturated soil outside is the source.
- High on a wall or near a corner: often overflowing gutters or a downspout dumping next to the house.
- Up through cracks in the middle of the floor: the water table under the house has risen.
Start Outside: Gutters, Downspouts and Grading
The least expensive fixes solve more leaks than people expect. Clean gutters, downspout extensions that land roof water several feet from the house, and soil that slopes away on every side keep a lot of water from ever reaching the wall. A driveway or patio that tilts toward the house sends water the wrong way too, and concrete leveling can correct it.
Interior Drain Tile and Sump Pumps
Interior waterproofing catches water where it gets in. A trench is cut along the inside of the wall, a perforated pipe in washed stone collects the water at footing level, and it runs to a sealed sump pit where a pump sends it out of the house. It can be done in any season and does not require digging up the yard.
- A plastic membrane at the base of the wall steers seepage into the drain
- Weep holes at the bottom of hollow block walls let trapped water drain
- A check valve and a discharge line routed away from the house keep water from coming back
- A battery backup keeps the pump running during a power outage
Exterior Basement Waterproofing
Exterior work keeps water from reaching the wall at all. The soil is dug out down to the footing, cracks are repaired, a waterproofing membrane and drainage board go on the wall, and a new footing drain is added before backfilling. It costs more and is harder once the ground freezes, but it makes sense when a wall also needs repair from the outside, such as a bowing wall being straightened or rebuilt.
Waterproofing and Wall Repair Together
Drain tile relieves some of the water pressure behind a wall, but it does not straighten a wall that has already moved. A cracked or bowing wall often needs both: crack repair or bracing, and water control so the problem does not come back. See typical prices in our guide to foundation repair cost in Fort Wayne.
More Questions About Basement Waterproofing
Can I stay in the house while drain tile is installed?
Yes, most families stay home. The work happens in the basement, but expect noise while the floor is cut and some dust. You will need to clear a strip a few feet wide along the walls being worked on.
Ask how the crew protects the rest of the house, where the broken concrete goes, and how long to stay off the new concrete.
Does waterproofing also help a cracked or bowing wall?
It helps with the cause. Water in the soil is what pushes on basement walls, and drain tile relieves some of that pressure. It does not straighten a wall that has already moved, so a bowing wall often needs bracing as well as water control.
Do I need a battery backup sump pump?
If your basement depends on a sump pump, a backup is worth considering. Power outages often happen during the same storms that send the most water to the pit. A battery backup runs for a limited time when the power is out or the main pump fails.
Will waterproofing fix humidity and a musty smell?
Only partly. Drain tile handles liquid water that seeps in. Basement air can still be humid in summer, because warm air condenses on cool concrete, so many dry basements still need a dehumidifier. A smell that stays after the leaks stop can mean mold behind finished walls.
Do I need a permit for basement waterproofing?
In Indiana, building permits are handled locally: in Fort Wayne and most of Allen County that means the local building department, while towns in other counties, such as Auburn or Roanoke, have their own offices. Interior drain tile and sump work often fall under different rules than digging along the outside of the foundation. A contractor who works in your area should know what applies. Put it in the written contract.
